Smart Solutions for Healthier, More Sustainable Homes
Social Housing
Large landlords face challenges in ensuring healthy homes, preventing mold, and addressing fuel poverty. cThings’ air quality monitoring solution identified risks, improved resident well-being, and enabled data-driven maintenance—reducing costs and promoting sustainable housing.
Our brief
We were approached by a prestigious and large-scale landlord with a visionary plan to implement an air quality solution for remote property monitoring, aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of their residents in healthy and secure homes.
The landlord had expressed concerns about mold formation in several properties and sought to identify the environmental conditions conducive to its growth. By detecting these conditions and raising awareness among residents, they aimed to prevent mold formation, saving on costly renovations and, more importantly, safeguarding the health of their tenants.
Furthermore, the landlord wanted to address the issue of fuel poverty by identifying properties that were being excessively heated, resulting in unnecessary energy consumption.
Additionally, the data collected could help identify properties where residents were not using heating when the temperature dropped, leading to potential dangerous health conditions.
Overall, this comprehensive air quality solution aimed to not only enhance the living conditions for the residents but also promote energy efficiency and contribute to a healthier and more sustainable living environment.
Our solution
cThings deployed a series of Indoor Air Quality Sensors across the properties, enabling continuous monitoring of temperature, humidity, and CO2 levels for our customers. These battery-powered sensors utilised wireless LoRaWAN communication, allowing for quick and cost-effective installation, setup, and commissioning within a single day.
Once the sensors were configured to transmit data to the cThings Cloud, we created a digital representation of each property. Our analytics tools were then fine-tuned to detect potential poor living conditions or signs of fuel poverty. This valuable data was made accessible to the customer’s support and maintenance team through our user-friendly online and mobile-compatible platform.
By leveraging the capabilities of the cThings Cloud, the customer gained valuable insights into the conditions of their properties. This empowered them to target maintenance, education, or direct intervention where necessary, ensuring the well-being of their residents and promoting overall property efficiency.
"In homes where we’ve installed our devices, we’re able to look out for our residents and keep them healthy by stopping mold before it becomes a problem. Not only does this make us happy, but it also helps us save on costs! It’s a real win-win situation and something we’re truly proud of!"
The results
Following the successful installation of the sensors and the implementation of the platform, the customer achieved a significant milestone. They gained the ability to discern properties that presented a high risk of mold growth. Utilising this critical information, the customer’s team proactively engaged with residents, providing interventions and suggestions to improve the internal conditions of each property, leading to a noteworthy enhancement in the residents' living conditions.
Furthermore, the data generated by the sensors proved to be instrumental in safeguarding vulnerable residents during cold weather. Automatic alerts were triggered whenever low internal temperatures were detected, enabling timely actions to address potential issues and alleviate fuel poverty.
In addition to these benefits, the solution also offered the advantage of identifying properties in need of maintenance, enabling targeted and prompt attention to maintenance requirements. This approach has yielded positive outcomes for both the residents and the property management team.
